Farmers’ market vendor Doggos Gus now serves their Tijuana-style bacon-wrapped hot dogs at North Park’s Twisted Taps

Mexican gourmet hot dogs, booths, dancing, entertainment and more food selections; such were the offerings at the 8th annual Santee Street Fair & Craft Beer Festival held on May 28. The main theme was honoring heroes for this Memorial Day tinged event held on the first day of many Americans’ three day holiday.

The Doggos Gus food stand located in San Diego, is well renowned for serving some of the best Hot Dogs in Southern California. A farmers market favorite specializing in Tijuana-style hot dogs has found a place to land in Imperial Beach. Doggos Gus is now sharing a kitchen with Imperial Beach Buns, the quick-service burger spot run by City Tacos that replaced the former I.B. Street Tacos earlier this year.

This street stall pops up everywhere from farmer's markets to breweries, serving its Oscar Mayer turkey links, wrapped in a choice of regular or turkey bacon and grilled until crisp. We suggest going all out with the toppings: get chopped tomatoes, grilled onions, jalapeños, guacamole and a secret spicy sauce. Cost: $5; $7 for a version topped with carnitas

Sold in street stalls throughout Tijuana, grilled hot dogs wrapped in bacon have found a home in San Diego. Doggos Gus, a roving vendor often spotted in farmer's markets throughout the city, follows the basic premise wrapping each link with bacon and grilled until crisp. But it’s the condiments — chopped tomatoes, grilled onions, jalapeños, guacamole and their secret spicy sauce — that send this dog over the top.

Doggos Gus’ owner Gustavo Tonella is a believer in giving things a try.About a month ago he applied for a $25,0000 grant made available through the California Restaurant Foundation who partnered with Chef and TV host Guy Fieri of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Tonella found out about the possibility of a grant from the California Restaurant Foundation. Although the timing was not perfect, he was a little past the deadline, Tonella decided to apply anyway. Tonella spoke to the foundation’s representative.

Two San Diego small restaurant owners received $25,000 grants last week from chef and TV host Guy Fieri, during Fieri’s online June 12 special “Guy’s Restaurant Reboot by LendingTree.” The livestreamed show was created to help restaurateurs get back on their feet following the pandemic. Fieri raised $300,000 in grants from donors like LendingTree and Twisted Tea.

The celebrity chef announced the grants Saturday. Six other individuals were awarded scholarships totaling $175,000. Five operators of independent restaurants in California were surprised with $25,000 grants on Saturday through a collaboration between celebrity chef Guy Fieri and the California Restaurant Association’s charity arm, the California Restaurant Foundation (CRF).
